The Loss of Person

When someone dies, their body is gone.
They are no longer a presence.
The loss I never expected, though, was the loss of the dead loved ones' persona.
Vanished are their ideas, memories, loves, beliefs.
Their presence in thought and emotion and comfort disappear.
They leave a void of presence, a hole in the fabric of humanity.
What happens to their consciousness, their compassion, their opinions?
They leave a hole in the cosmos.

  1. I am truly sorry for your loss. Your reference of the cosmos reminded me of one of my favorite concepts that's almost comforting in a completely objective sense.

    From SciAm:

"The law of conservation of energy, also known as the first law of thermodynamics, states that the energy of a closed system must remain constant—it can neither increase nor decrease without interference from outside. The universe itself is a closed system, so the total amount of energy in existence has always been the same. The forms that energy takes, however, are constantly changing."
